Trump Radically Changed The U.S. Economy Because He Could

OH, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
WELCOME TO “THE LATE SHOW.” I’M YOUR HOST STEPHEN COLBERT. YOU KNOW, THE WORDS ”
“CLUSTERMUNCH OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS” GET THROWN AROUND
PRETTY CASUALLY IN WASHINGTON, BUT THEY REALLY APPLY TO TRUMP’S
WHITE HOUSE TODAY. CNN SUMMED IT UP THIS WAY:
“WHITE HOUSE MELTDOWN ON FULL DISPLAY.” THE WHITE HOUSE TOURS MUST BE
GETTING REALLY INTERESTING. “OKAY, NOW WE’RE PASSING THE
LINCOLN BEDROOM. ON YOUR RIGHT, YOU’LL SEE JOHN
KELLY SUFFOCATING JARED KUSHNER WITH A PILLOW. AND ON YOUR LEFT, THE CLAW MARKS
ON THE WALL LEFT BY STEVE BANNON AS HE WAS DRAGGED OUT TO THE
CURB.” FIRST, THE PRESIDENT JUST
ANNOUNCED HE’S PUTTING TARIFFS ON IMPORTED STEEL AND ALUMINUM. SO THE GUN THING IS SOLVED? I GUESS? MOVING ON? HE’S GOT THE ATTENTION SPAN OF A
GOLDFISH OFF ITS RITALIN. SO, WHY? TURNS OUT TRUMP’S NOSTALGIC FOR
THE DAYS OF BIG STEEL.>>I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS GROWING
UP, U.S. STEEL, THAT WAS THE ULTIMATE COMPANY. AND, TODAY, YOU HAVE SO MANY
CLOSED PLANTS, AND THE NAFTA DEAL WAS A DISASTER FOR OUR
COUNTRY.>>STEPHEN: YES, WE ALL REMEMBER
GROWING UP IDOLIZING U.S. STEEL. I REMEMBER I HAD THE TRADING
CARDS. I TRADED BILLY CLARK MY CHAIRMAN
DAVID M. RODERICK FOR HIS C.E.O. WALTER MUNFORD ROOKIE CARD.” IN MINT CONDITION. I KEEP IT IN THE SLEEVE. NOW, I’M NO ECONOMIST, SO I
CAN’T SAY WHETHER THIS TARIFF IS GOOD OR BAD, BUT I’M GUESSING
BAD BECAUSE TRUMP ANNOUNCED IT. THE DOW DROPPED MORE THAN 500
POINTS. YES, IT SUNK LIKE AN ANCHOR MADE
OF SOLID, AMERICAN STEEL. ( LAUGHTER )
SO, THE MARKET HAS SPOKEN. UNFORTUNATELY, I CAN’T REPEAT
THE WORD IT SAID ON CBS. TURNS OUT, “RAISING STEEL
TARIFFS” MIGHT BE TRUMP’S BEST IDEA SINCE “GIVE TEACHERS GUNS,”
BECAUSE MOST ECONOMISTS AGREE THAT TRUMP’S MASSIVE NEW TARIFFS
WILL HURT U.S. BUSINESSES AND CONSUMERS BECAUSE IT COULD MAKE
THINGS LIKE BEER, CARS AND BASEBALL BATS MORE EXPENSIVE. I MEAN, THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO
GET DRUNK AND SMASH A CAR WITH A BASEBALL BAT, BUT WHO CAN AFFORD
IT NOW? ( LAUGHTER )
NOW THIS IS REALLY A TRADE WAR AIMED AT CHINA, AND CHINA’S
MINISTRY OF COMMERCE IS INVESTIGATING WHETHER TO LIMIT
IMPORTS OF U.S. SORGHUM. NO! NOT OUR SORGHUM! YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS… I
HOPE. BECAUSE WHAT IS SORGHUM? IS IT THE SAME THING AS NOUGAT? IS THAT FLUID THAT BAKED BEANS
COME IN? WHATEVER IT IS, IT’S JUST THE
BEGINNING, BECAUSE THIS MAY START A TRADE
WAR WITH OTHER COUNTRIES SLAPPING TARIFFS ON AMERICAN
PRODUCTS, RANGING FROM KENTUCKY BOURBON TO WISCONSIN CHEESE. SO, SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR CHILD’S
FAVORITE RESTAURANT, DRUNK E. CHEESE. ( LAUGHTER )
OF COURSE, THE SITUATION IS ALREADY BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE BY
OUR GREATEST ENEMY, CANADA, WHO’S THREATENING RETALIATION. ADDING, SOHRRY. ( LAUGHTER )
WHAT’S INTERESTING IS HOW TRUMP CAME TO THIS DECISION. ACCORDING TO WHITE HOUSE
SOURCES, “TRUMP IS MAD AND FEELS HE’S BEING POORLY SERVED BY
STAFF. AND HE WANTS TARIFFS, DAMMIT! SO WHEN SOMEBODY SAYS, ‘YOU
KNOW, MR. PRESIDENT, YOU COULD JUST DO IT,’ THAT’S PRETTY
APPEALING.” SO, TRUMP IS MAKING RADICAL
CHANGES TO THE ECONOMY BECAUSE HE’S CRANKY? OF COURSE, IT’S NOT THE FIRST
TIME MAJOR POLICY HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY PRESIDENTIAL MOOD. CONSIDER THE IMMORTAL OPENING
WORDS OF LINCOLN’S EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION: “I JUST GOT LAID! WE’RE FREEING THE SLAVES!”
( LAUGHTER )>>OH, I’LL REMEMBER IT LIKE
THAT.>>Stephen: THAT’S MY LINKEN
IMPRESSION.>>OH, I DIDN’T REMEMBER HIM
LIKE THAT.>>Stephen: I THINK I NAILED
IT. IN FACT, THIS WAS SUCH A
SPUR-OF-THE-MOMENT DECISION THAT, ALL DAY, NO ONE WAS SURE
IT WAS EVEN GOING TO HAPPEN. IN THE MORNING, THE WHITE HOUSE
CONFIRMED IT WAS HAPPENING, THEN THEY SAID IT WASN’T GOING TO
HAPPEN, THEN THEY SAID IT WOULD BE JUST A LISTENING SESSION, AND
FINALLY THEY SAID, “STAFF IS WAITING TO TUNE IN TO THE
MEETING ‘LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE’ TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS.” GREAT, THE WHITE HOUSE DIDN’T
EVEN KNOW THEIR OWN POLICY UNTIL THEY HEARD TRUMP SAY, “GIANT
PILE OF ALUMINUM CANS, WILL YOU ACCEPT THIS ROSE?”
( LAUGHTER )

  1. So, Putin wants to start an arms race, China is becoming a dictatorship, and Trump just made your military's purchases considerably more expensive? Something's rotten in whichever state Trump is playing golf, eh?

  2. Everything a White male does is evil apparently. They go softer on gender and racial diversity.

  3. what the fuck is A L U M I N U M ??????????? I am looking at the periodic table fucking right now andddddddddddd I cannot find it hmmmmm hey Stevie boy ? First tell yourself and your fellow yanks how to pronounce the elements allright !!!! Perhaps that is the reason you suck in business !!!! Oh we dutch know….. we are the INVENTORS of business we breath eat and fucking master it….. you suck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Ah, Canada – the only nation where bumping into someone in a club who's carrying a drink, thus spilling it, shall result in him saying "sorry."

Very pleasant, polite individuals – I like 'em a lot.

  5. Maybe China putting tariffs on Bourbon will make it cheaper and easier to get ahold of here. They've been buying up a lot of it lately.

  6. As long as our country measures value only through economics, we are going to have this stupid craziness. There are other values, like clean air and water; safe, educated children – PRICELESS.

  7. I just read that one of Trump's advisors sold his stock in steel one day before the tariff was announced. Hmmmm.

  8. I thought liberals opposed free trade. Or did they start supporting free trade only because Trump became president?

  9. Let's bring back US steel industry! We will need about 200,000 immigrant workers to work in it, but that's a good thing right?

  10. jeebus…even an idiot knows that low level industry isn't what stimulates the economy… you need manufacturing, not steel and coal jobs. Do americans know just how stupid they look to the rest of the world because of this orange bloated turd?

  11. he's making these changes because, we are giving our business to outside countries, instead of allowing American ppl that are not employed the opportunity to get a well paying job. Having said that, the owners of major companies are going to lose a lot of there bottom line to middle class citizens.

  12. Tariffs are always bad for consumers but good for the specific sections who are involved in production of the particular goods.

  13. He should have put the tariff on gold and oil imported from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria… then donated it back to the countries for stealing their shit and destroying their country

  14. I have come to dislike the Stephen Colbert show after watching numerous awkward interviews and how much he discusses politics, back to Conan I go.

  15. This guy must be in love with Trump really bad. And he's a irrelevant little shit. Also liberals are degenerates and sucks so much tranny cock 🙂

  16. Everyone should check out Bisalloy Australian steel, its used in the military as Armour plate, we are getting certified by technical experts in Germany who test our steel, we export military grade steel to other countries like china who specify our steel, we also send this kind of steel to the USA, so who wins?

  17. I don't disagree with Trump. Bring jobs back to US workers, and stop companies exploiting "foreigners" and paying them badly and having them work in sweatshops. If prices rise that's to be expected. They're just going to how they should be.

  18. Ummmm you impose a tariff to stop American companies buying products from oversees which increases economies of other countries. This way it will be cheaper to manufacture steel in America for American companies, create jobs and increase the US economy. This is for the company's that refuse to make a deal and take the tax break offer to bring back manufacturing to the US, this is a good decision for the people if you still hate trump by now it proves you really don't listen or watch what's going on. You just blindly listen to media produced opinions with no substance. It's popular to hate trump and think he is an fool so most of you just go along with it it's a political strategy that plays on social acceptance.

  19. Only economic changes since trump became president have been positive, thousands more jobs, higher pay for middle class workers, several multi billiom dollar international deals and a record high for the stock market. No idea what you retards are still bitching about. The single thing you dumbasses got right is that there is big change in the economy.

  20. After watching The dry and offensive Oscar opening ceremony I decided to watch a Colbert Monologue for good satire. Turns out the Onion is going out of business as all the bad Jokes are actual real news. Saddest day ever.

  21. I'm crying! You crack me up, Steve. If I only had your balls! If you could spare one for a pal, would you give it up?

  22. Canada is an ally! Do you really think we are a threat to your national security??
And don't let Trump lie and tell y'all have been victims in any trade deal with us—we are such a world power with an economy that dwarfs the US. (sarcasm) Good grief.
You have an absolute moron for president who btw—just put the presidential seal on golf tees at all his golf courses which is, of course, illegal! AND has played 100 days of golf in 400 days in office! Liar and hypocrite. Good luck America.

  23. Oh you liberals. See this is what happens when you are constantly in an echo chamber. You scream tolerance but won't tolerate people with different views from your own. Take a minute a listen to what Trump is saying first.

Here is the deal. The USA has a trade deficit of $800 BILLION. WE believe in free trade but clearly everyone else doesn't! They put tariffs on OUR exports so let's also put tariffs on theirs! That's only fair. And with regards to a trade war, if it happens, who do you think the biggest losers will be? Here is a clue… NOT US! If China decides to get smart, well we have about a $500 billion trade deficit with them. If trade stopped altogether, China would suffer way more than we would. If the EU or any other country decides to retaliate, who says we can't tariff more goods from their countries.
The USA is the one with the deficits. Everyone else makes tons of profit off of us! They would not dare to retaliate because Trump doesn't play.

And before you whine, remember you guys said that Trump moving the embassy to Jerusalem would bring chaos? Where is the chaos now?? Remember you said if Trump got elected the economy would collapse, well last I checked my 401K is up 30% and I got an extra few hundred dollars in my check last month despite you liberals claiming that tax cuts would hurt my bottom line. The economy is FINALLY seeing 3% GDP growth under Trump after over a decade of that not happening.
Clearly Trump is doing things right.
You know, I used to be a lunatic liberal before Trump but godamn, I am feeling the effects of his policies and I love it!

  24. It is very unsettling to think that his administration often doesn't know what their president is going to do, or what his positions are. This isnt an absolutist monarchy, and in addition policies should be thoroughly thought out and sounded against trusted advisors in multiple pertinent fields before going live.

  25. So Trump is working to solve the problem of gun violence. You can't make guns if you don't have steel and aluminum.

  26. I am in favor of tariffs and protectionist policies, so this is actually the first thing that Trump had done that I support.

  27. The empty cities in China are monuments to the opportunities stolen from two generations of Americans. No education, no jobs, and no opportunities and lots of drugs.

  28. That explains why gas in my town just jumped by 10 cents a gallon… Can we use those baseball bats on trump instead?

  29. Sorghum is a plant you get some grain eaten by poorly developed nations also sorghum syrup and molasses.

  30. Trump propagandists keep saying that it'll raise the price of beer by $.006 while completely ignoring how much it will raise the price of a vehicle or a building. So easy to diminish the reality by focusing on the smallest impacts and excluding the significant ones. OMG the price of staples and safety pins!

  31. Sorgum is what my brother eats instead of popcorn because he's allergic to corn. You pop it like you pop popcorn

  32. Maybe this is Trump's secret genius plan to deal with guns. Make the materials for gun manufacturing scarce and lose People jobs so they can't afford guns. Lol.

  33. Teachers with Guns: Learn from the police! Carry 2 guns. One 4 shooting unruly students & one to plant on shot students with no gun.

  34. FYI : China is the largest buyer of American sorghum products. It imported about $960 million worth last year.

  35. Sorghum is a Food grain makes cereal, bread, animal feed, and can even be turned into ethanol too. it has a large variety of uses

  36. So, the bully who is ten times bigger than Canada, just threatened us while pretending to renegotiate a trade treaty with us.
So, he wins! He's 1000 times stronger than Canada is. Ya, that's the way to treat friends. But he won't take on China cause he'd get his ass kicked. So kick your friends. That is what makes America great !

  37. Tariffs only help the local producers of these goods and services. Consumers will not benefit from tariffs as this decreases competition making goods and services more expensive.
Tariffs are mostly not a good idea unless the protection is serving a long term strategy and is to be lifted in the near future.
Trade is very advantageous for the countries involved when terms are set right. Tariffs are not well received in international trade so other countries will retaliate. So sad everyone loses, except for a minority.

  38. China is becoming the dominant super power…………. ! :>0
    .
they are "weaponizing capital" and tariffs are the reaction
    .

"China Churns Out Half The World's Steel,"
    .
"British steel has been left weak by cheap Chinese competition"
    .
About half of the 1.6bn tonnes of steel made globally comes from China. Firms operating in the UK just cannot compete"
    .
    FACTS:
"Chinese steel production has expanded hugely. Over the past 25 years, output has grown more than 12-fold. By comparison, the EU's output fell by 12% while the US's remained largely flat. "

"The drive behind that stellar increase has been China's double-digit economic growth over the past decades. That led to ever more domestic demand for steel and the government invested heavily in the industry during the boom years. But that demand has been severely hit by the current slowdown, leaving China with more steel than it needs.
It produced more than 822 million tonnes of steel in 2014 and is expected to produce even more this year, yet projected demand for its steel in 2016 is only 672 million tonnes.Chinese steel is therefore sold on the international market at extremely low prices – critics say it's sold at a loss. As a consequence, other countries' steel plants find it increasingly hard to compete. "

  39. There's a loophole with the aluminum tariff: most countries will just spell it 'aluminium' and ship it in as usual. 😛

  40. These tariffs affect Canada and other allies substantially more than China, the fact that he says he is targeting China with these tariffs is ridiculous… Ah well, I am fairly certain the WTO will allow reasonable retaliation measures against the US if he actually includes Canada/Mexico in the tariffs.

  41. Impeach Arrest and Imprison Treasonist Traitor Trump. Punish this Foreign controlled entity to the fullest extent of the law. Treason is a Capital crime. Prepare the ropes.

  42. This is Trump's policy of protectionism in the name of safeguarding national security, which is out of date, ignorant and anti globalization. Who can stop economic globalization? The United States will be disastrous, EU retaliatory action is just the beginning of the game, China and South Korea, the European Union, Brazil, Russia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, the largest exporter of steer and aluminum will form a unified camp strongly, even Canada and Mexico are willing to accept the temporary immunity of the United States, but the results of WW3 obviously, the United States
will be destroyed totally, hope Trump will not be the second Hitler.

  43. The biggest problem is that the US needs to cut Federal spending across the board by about 10% for 5 Years. Whenever a political party comes even close to that, they get voted out. The American people cannot even endure a 10% cut for people that are not even American.

The biggest problem is that the debt and the economy are largely tanking due to feminism. Nobody ever promotes feminism or equality, saying it is good for the economy. Unfortunately, it turns out it is really bad for the economy.

In a traditional marriage, the woman stays at home looks after the children and the man works. If there is a high proportion of marriage then nearly all unmarried women and married men will be able to find a job. There is full employment. The employed men can also do jobs more intensively, because they have a woman at home supporting them. 3 day business trip, no problem. Work late and can't pick the kids up, no problem, got a wife for that.

When you get more women opting for a career, unemployment rises, women don't want to marry unemployed men, and there are a LOT more people looking for work, but they are still consuming the same amount of goods, less actually, because employed women have less time to spend on leisure than married ones, so there is significant unemployment.

So we are replacing, in the economy, married stay at home women with children, with unmarried unemployed men, unmarried women, and single mothers, who all produce less, some far less, than married men. The single mothers need support, they cant do it alone, they don't produce nearly as much, and they need Federal funding. The unemployed men are a pure dead-weight on the economy. They are criminally unhappy and have to be policed, or crime goes through the roof.

I am all for gender equality as a moral question, but it is a total disaster economically, and when the great depression comes, with the zombie apocalypse, feminists, it is your fault, and it isn't going to end well for anyone.

  44. China prepares to bring out the big guns in the TradeWar. Rather than firing at its own citizens like America did by imposing tariffs, China will turn its guns on Americans by selling Treasuries!

  45. The scariest part about Trump isn't Trump, it's his supporters that scare me, this man could literally the down the flag and shit on it and scream "I have middle America and I want them enslaved" on national television and they would support and make excuses for him to the very end. Trump is harmless it's his ideals and the supporters who propagate them with such blind zeal and anger on a daily basis that is the real threat. Republicans love to us people's ignorance and anger to control them.. Wake up and smell the propaganda before these idiots take is back to the great depression era or further.

  46. I'm giving Trump the benefit of the doubt on this until we see what really happens in due time – not speculation about what might happen. What I think is that this is a strategy, a way to get a better deal for America. I don't know how but I believe in Trump because so far he has done well for us (tax cuts, low unemployment rate, etc). I think he knows what he is doing. He's just not telling everyone cause that would spoil his plans (you can't tell your enemy what you're doing in war or they will use the knowledge against you). Ultimately we will see what becomes of this and we won't have to speculate about if it might be good or bad. On the surface I agree that it doesn't look good & he is getting criticized for the tariffs, but just wait & see what happens. He just might surprise us all.

  47. I love how everything about trump shatters the tired ignorant argument of women can’t govern due to “pms mood swings”. What a shithole America is right now.

  48. his sidekick was like woa wait a minute i dont remeber it like that after colbert jokes around saying Lincoln just got laid im freeing the slaves

  49. Your closing comment about Lincoln, and the Emancipation Proclamation, which was two years AFTER the civil war…

    Really?

  50. Of course he would not mention Obama’s tariffs on tires from China that ended costing The American consumers millions of dollars. That’s in the past, not relevant any more and wouldn’t be as funny. I,m not a Trump supporter by the way.

  51. Playing Titanic on the "sinking" joke was genius. Does JB improvise them on the spot or does he have a preview of the monologue? Either way, it's inspired.
