Sabres fans react to canceled games


IN THE NEWSROOM…EMILY GUGGENMOS, NEWS 4 IT’S THE ANNOUNCEMENT SABRES FANS HAVE BEEN FEARING. THE N-H-L IS NOW CANCELING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE REGULAR SEASON … AS THAT LINGERING LOCK-OUT PUTS HOCKEY IN LIMBO. NEWS 4’S BRITTNI SMALLWOOD IS LIVE WITH MORE. ALL GAMES IN THE START OF THE SEASON BETWEEN OCTOBER 11TH AND 24TH ARE CANCELLED. THAT MEANS A TOTAL OF 82 REGULAR SEASON GAMES HAVE BEEN DROPPED. THE SABRES WERE SLATED TO PLAY 5 GAMES DURING THIS PERIOD…4 WERE SCHEDULED TO BE HOME GAMES AT THE FIRST NIAGARA CENTER. NHL DEPUTY COMMISIONER BILL DALY RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING IN PART… “WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO DOING EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO FORGE AN AGREEMENT THAT IS FAIR TO THE PLAYERS, FAIR TO THE TEAMS AND GOOD FOR OUR FANS.” FANS WE TALKED TO LAST MONTH DIDN’T SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF SYMPATHY FOR EITHER SIDE: ((STEVE HOLLIDAY-SABRES FAN-“IN TODAY’S ECONOMY, YOU KNOW PEOPLE ARE HAVING A ROUGH TIME OUT THERE, SO IT’S HARD TO BE SYMPATHETIC TO SOMEBODY THAT’S MAKING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.”)) THIS IS THE THIRD TIME SINCE 1994 THAT THE NHL WILL NOT START AS SCHEDULED BECAUSE OF A LOCKOUT. IN THE 1994-95 SEASON, THE PUCK WASN’T DROPPED UNTIL JANUARY FOR A SHORTENED SEASON. AND THE ENTIRE 2004-05 SEASON WAS LOST DUE TO A LABOR DISPUTE.
